To have and to keep, in sickness and in health – whether you remember it or not.
A Utah couple’s love story involved a breakup, dramatic accident, memory loss and a heartfelt reunion that many online are comparing to a plot straight out of a Hallmark movie.
Jenna Brotherson married her now-husband Mitchell seven months after splitting – but only because a shock made her forget they weren’t together.
“When people ask us about our love story, it’s our favorite part to tell,” she said.
Jenna and Mitchell, now both 27, had been friends for several months before they started dating.
But in February 2020, Jenna called things off with her then-boyfriend because she was “too overwhelmed with life.”
The next day, Mitchell was skiing on Utah’s Beaver Mountain when he attempted a flip, blacked out and woke up as paramedics were taking him to the hospital.
He suffered a severe shock and immediately called Jenna asking her to pick him up because he couldn’t drive.
“I’m like, ‘Why are you texting me this? I just broke up with him,'” Jenna recalled in a video posted to TikTok.
Apparently, Mitchell’s shock had caused him to forget that they had broken up.
“Mitch kept texting me and trying to get out after his shock and I was confused as to why he would keep texting me because we had broken up,” she told People.
“I thought maybe he took his friends’ position statement too seriously. It even got to the point where I told him my roommates and I were having a rough day and he came over and brought us ice cream.”
Jenna quickly realized she made a mistake ending her romance with Mitchell and appreciated how “kind and thoughtful” he continued to be.
“I was nervous to swallow my pride and ask if he was dating again,” Jenna said, recalling getting a text from Mitchell to spend the day she returned from spring break.
When Jenna finally asked them to get back together, she realized he had no idea they weren’t together.
She recounted their breakup, and although Mitchell remembered talking to her in the car that day, he couldn’t remember what the conversation was about.
“He thought it was super funny and I was relieved. It made it easy to get back together, because to him, we were never together!” Jenna shared.
Five months later the pair got engaged. Less than three weeks later, they were married on September 4, 2020.
“During my husband’s speech, he didn’t remember the breakup, but how he’s so grateful that it all worked out in the end,” Jenna said.
